After spinning some alpaca yarn and colouring it with Kool Aid, I wasn’t really sure what to make with it! There wasn’t enough yarn for a decent sized project, so I decided to go small scale - crochet flowers! The yarn is quite chunky, so the flowers it produced are a good size - suitable for brooches, hair clips and to attach to hair bobbles. I’ve popped the pattern at the end of this post, if you’d like to have a go yourself. Sewing the flowers together once you’ve crocheted each strip is a little fiddly at first, but with practise you’ll soon get the hang of it!

Pattern for crochet flowers:

  1. Chain 26

  2. D.C. in 2nd chain from hook and all the way back along the chain, turn

  3. 5 treble crochet in the first stitch, sl st in next stitch - repeat another 4 times

  4. 5 half treble crochet in the next stitch, sl st in next stitch - repeat another 3 times

  5. 5 double crochet in the next stitch, sl st in the next stitch - repeat another 2 times

  6. Cut your yarn leaving a long thread for sewing

  7. Using a needle, wind the petals around and sew together on the back - you’ll create a spiral effect on the back of the flower and the petals will form a rose on the front. The sewing together is a little fiddly the first few times you do it - I had to unpick my first few attempts and start again as they looked dreadful!

Happy crafting! Claire 😊
