Exploring willow crafting is a truly captivating experience. Over the last few months, I have immersed myself in the joy of this versatile material, creating imaginative pieces like whimsical stars, practical bird feeders, and even attempting a simple basket. What began as a simple interest has blossomed into a rewarding hobby, allowing me to nurture my creativity and connect with the beauty of nature.

The Allure of Willow

Willow is cherished for its flexibility, strength, and natural beauty. Artisans have celebrated this material for centuries, and its unique qualities allow for diverse artistic expressions. For instance, varieties such as Salix viminalis (basket willow) and Salix purpurea (purple willow) provide different textures and colors, enriching the crafting experience. Not only does working with willow let me engage my artistic side, but it also offers a wonderful way to reconnect with the outdoors.

Crafting a Christmas Willow Star

My journey started with making a willow star - the steps were easy to follow, using fresh willow rods, bending and intertwining them into a star shape. This traditional craft has roots that stretch back hundreds of years and although the finished product wasn't without its flaws, the finished star was perfect for hanging in my dining room adorned with twinkly lights.

Creating a Bird Feeder

Next, I shifted focus to designing a bird feeder. Using similar techniques from the star, I constructed a somewhat rustic feeder that offered sustenance for my feathered friends while enhancing the visual appeal of my garden. I carefully wove the willow into a solid structure that stands resilient against the weather, ensuring birds can access the fatball easily. Watching blue-tits, robins and cheeky starlings flock to feed brought joy to my outdoor space. Studies suggest that feeding birds can improve mental health, fostering a stronger connection to nature and its wonders.

Crafting a Beautiful Willow Basket

My latest project is to create a classic willow basket. This endeavour is a more complex, requiring a sturdy base and advanced weaving techniques. With patience, I'm finding my groove, ultimately hoping to craft a beautiful, functional basket. Fingers crossed!
